I am a new user of the Pro version and cannot load word.doc files. I can load rtf (rich text format) but I lose figures and equations in the process.

regrettably several pictures and equations are memorized in the internal Word format that can't often be imported directly in other programs.
I do this way: I take a screen shot of the equation with ALT + Print Screen (this when the MSWord window is show). Then I open my paint program (Corel) and I use SHIFT + INS or Edit >Paste to paste the screen shot from the clipboard to Corel. Then I use the crop feature and I crop the equation, and then I save the image as JPG (e.g. equation1.jpg)
Then I use Insert >Image to insert the equation in the ebook. It is very boring when you have several equations, but there is no other way.
For the images, I have almost ever the image that I have inserted in Word in the original JPEG format, so I use the original in the ebook. Sometimes I scale/resample the image (in EBW, you can resize the image; but maybe you don't know that then you should right click the image, and click on "Resample", this makes the image better for the ebook readers devices)

Thanks for the bad news. I write engineering textbooks and have about 1000 equations in a typical 500 page book. These are entered into MS Word using Math Type an equation editor that is better than the one included in Word.
Perhaps a compiler that would read a pdf file would be a better approach. Any recommendations.

the various ebook formats do not allow vector equations (such as in Word or in PDF) so the conversion to image is the only possible way.
to make the process faster, you should find a word to image or pdf to image converter - this way all the long document will be converted to images. Then only the crop phase will be manual, and, while 500 is a good number, it will just take 2-3 days..

I have managed to handle figures and equations by copying them from word into photoshop and then pasting them into ewriter. Not convenient but doable. Equations are copied into MS paint and tehn copied again and pasted into ewriter. Again, not convenient but doable.
I have a few chapters finally broght into ewriter and have order teh pages using TOC, but now I cannot save and exe file.
I have linked from teh cover to the preface page and back. Do I have to link to every page. I have read the pdf manual and can link but I do not know the strategy for linking a bout 30 pages that cover 16 chapters in one of my 500 page books.
Help would be appreciated.

for the exe, you should link each page with the next one. Fast way to do it: - go to the next page (if you put pages in order, you can do this with CTRL +, hold the "CTRL" key then press the "+" key on the keyboard) - go back to the current page (CTRL -) - write "next" then highlight the text (or you can use an image); then put the cursor over the block and right click, then from the popup menu choose "Quick special link to..." and from the pages automatically listed (last visited pages) you will see the next page (by title; page title -> Format >Page properties), choose it and the link is done
There is also a fast way to insert within a page a Index or Summary or Table of contents (with automatic links to all existing pages - or part of them), place the cursor where you want this table of contents to be inserted, then use the menu "Insert >Contents..."
