Is it possible to place text directly over an image? If so, how?

Two possibilities:
 
- use the image as background of a 1x1 table or as bg for a table cell
 
- right click the image, choose "Edit", then place the text with your Graphic software (if you don't have a Graphic software installed, you need one)
