Title: word, password, disable, ease of use, security? Post by YesIcan on Jan 8th, 2008, 10:40pm Hello everyone. I'm creating a home study program and I've been searching for the best way to deliver it. Your product sounds great, but is it easy for a non-tech person such as myself to use? I like the forum you have here. I think it's a wonderful way to offer support. I just want to be sure that this is really the right product for me. I'm considering the PRO version of your software. My home study program is currently in MS word. Can I copy and paste the file into your program directly? I've been looking for an ebook creator that has tight security features. Yours compares well with another one I considered (ebook gold). Are your security features easy to implement? Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. My final product will consist of not only text, but photos and possibly video as well if the ebook creator I choose has the video capability. Security is my number one concern (the computer locking is extremely important to me), as well as being able to disable the ebook should the customer request a refund. My second concern is ease of use. Thanks. |

Title: Re: easy to use and protections Post by Support Staff on Jan 9th, 2008, 6:09am Hi! EBooksWriter is all visual, so it's easy to use. To add protections you just click some buttons in some dialogs. The same to create the ebook: you may copy and paste from Word, as well you can write directly within EbooksWriter (the link, images, video features are more powerful than in Word). The feature "disable the ebook if the customer requires a refund" requires the VirtualVault plug-in ( www.ebookswriter.com/virtualvault/ ). This is offered as separate plug-in because this kind of protection (a protection that permits disabling) has some advantages for the seller (you) but makes the ebook too much locked for certain users, due to the constraints implied in this protection. This because with VirtualVault the ebook can be opened only if you are connected to the Internet (as you may understand, if you want to be able to disable the ebook, then the ebook must ask permission to a internet server - the virtualvault special server - every time it is opened, so you can add/revocate permissions; you can not disable anything magically). Basically it's a commercial decision: you must evaluate if there is more damage with a ebook that actually requires the internet, at least at the opening (some customers may not like this), or the plain EbooksWriter's ebooks (without the plugin), that can be read everywhere, also without the Internet, and can be password protected (but you can not revokate a password / the access in the rare case the customer requires a refund). You find another long thread about protection in this forum, where a lot of users posted their thoughts. Basically the main idea is that the protection is necessary to keep the honest customer honest, and that it is not wise to insist on "too much" protection. Hope this is sufficient. See the other threads also :-) For any other questions, just ask. When you post to the forum, try to use a descriptive title, and try to post only questions that are relevant for all the users (= may interest others). We have good email support and a contact form www.ebookswriter.com/contact/ for the rest! |

Title: Re: Is this the right product for me? Post by YesIcan on Jan 9th, 2008, 9:10pm Thank you for answering my question in such a timely manner and so professionally. I really do appreciate it. I can live with the fact that I won't be able to disable the ebook should a customer request a refund. But, if I don't buy the VirtualVault, can a customer send a copy of the ebook to anyone else? From what I understand, this isn't possible because the ebook will be locked to the customer's computer only. Correct? Thanks. |

Title: Re: protections, lock to pc Post by Support Staff on Jan 10th, 2008, 4:09am The VirtualVault also adds the "Lock to PC" feature (that also needs an authentication provided by Internet). Without the VirtualVault (plain EBooksWriter), the ebook may be locked by a password, or by several passwords, *plus* the end user full name and email (if he sends the ebook, it won't work for another user). As said there are long threads in this forum with people that do prefer one solution or the other one... maybe you can take a look. http://www.paperinik.com/cgi-bin/eng/YaBB.pl?board=EBW;action=display;num=1131303555 http://www.paperinik.com/cgi-bin/eng/YaBB.pl?board=EBW;action=display;num=1066754681 if any other question please post there. With this reply to you basically we duplicate part of these threads, and this is not the best thing to do in a forum. The forum is nice and useful also as you can use the search feature and you can find your answer (if there is already one, and usually there is) without actually having to post and wait for an answer :). |

Title: Re: Is this the right product for me? Post by YesIcan on Jan 10th, 2008, 11:30pm Ok. Does this mean, then, that if the customer sends it to one of his friends, and that friend types in the password plus the person's full name that sent it to them, plus that person's email address that the friend can then open the ebook? In other words, if the ebook is password protected, is there any way someone other than the person who paid for it can open it? Thanks. |

Title: Re: Is this the right product for me? Post by Support Staff on Jan 11th, 2008, 5:49am Yes, but it will clearly show the user name on the end user PC, and will conflict with other ebooks the user may have. This is usually sufficient to keep the honest user honest (I don't want that my friends have programs or ebooks purchased by me that show my name - what happens if they install this at work and there is a audition / verification? no, thanks) To completely avoid this the only solution is the Lock to PC with VirtualVault. Please see the threads I pointed out above, and avoid posting other question within this thread. I have been kind but this reply is a duplicate (things already said in the topics pointed above). If something in these threads is not clear, please post there, not here. This will be useful for other users, it's a kindness you have for the other visitors of the forum. |
