My PC crashed. I have a CD with an Ebook
which I want to edit. There is a Reader
psw, i.e. erp. I have of course lost
my .ewp file.

Is there any way I can get around this
loss and get my Ebook into the Ebook
Writer?

First of all (for the other readers of the forum) never save a .erp or .ewp file on a CD that you will distribute, because it can contain the password

This said, in your case, maybe, if the ebook has a single password (no custom password for each user), then you have a solution

Open the erp with the MSWindows notepad (it is just a text file) and there you may find your password. Then recreate a .ewp file as per the instructions shown when it show the pass error (you can also with notepad - be aware that if you save abc.ewp the notepad will attempt to save abc.ewp.txt so you may have to rename the file at the end of the story)

The .EWP file stores the password / password seeds (if any; there is a EWP file if you added passwords for the ebook end users; it is not for the "read only" password that forbids editing).
Usually the EWP file is saved in the same place where you saved the AEH file.
If you move the AEH but not the EWP file, you will lose access to the AEH file. To restore the access, just move also the EWP file.

In case of loss of the EWP file, it can be manually recreated with the instructions above, as long as you remember the password(s).
There is no way to reverse-engine the AEH file to find a lost password.
So authors should always keep a copy of EBW files, or write down the password(s) on paper.

The EWP file must not be distributed as it contains the passwords (or the password seeds if "custom password for each user - these are also called "author password(s)); it is separated from the AEH file for obvious security reason.

stored (besides the .AEH) whenever I change ANYTHING on the dialog (window)

Certain old versions have a bug that has now been fixed.
There is a workaround.
When you use Hypertext > Current hypertext options, before doing anything else, click the Password tab (this will assure that the password list is refreshed and the EWP not subsequently deleted).

Then you can go to the first tab or other tabs and apply any other change.

Why do you have two .erp files in the folder with AEH book when the password inserted by reader is wrong? In addition, if the password was wrong, why the book was still opened?

The software, on the customer/reader side, do memorize the password as .erp file (after the first succesful type, after the first time the customer enters the correct pass); if, before creating the ebook, in the Reader/Show options (last tab of the Hypertext / Current hypertext properties) you check the box "don't store pass", then the pass won't be saved in the .erp and will be asked each time the end user reads the ebook (this could be annoying - use only if you really need so).

The .erp file is related to the related ebook, if you install 2 or 3 ebooks, they are installed in the same place, there will be 2 or 3 erp files (if the software is allowed to save passwords; and if the software is allowed to install - "delete on exit" not checked)

The encrypted pages of a ebook can not be opened with the wrong password (as the password is used to decrypt - there is not just a check of the validity of the password, the password MUST be correct).
