Background image sizing

Greetings again.
If I want to have semi-transparent background images on pages, how do I know what size the images must be to have their aspect ratio match a page?
For example, I want to prepare a collage of rectangular product photos using PhotoShop and then soften it to become a background image for certain pages.
How do I know the size the image should be to not distort when I specify that it occupy 100% of a page (including frameset pages if they are handled differently)? If 100% refers to only one dimension - width for example - then this may not be an issue.
I did not see this 'size' issue described in the maual or in FAQ. BTW - OS=WindowsXP Tool=CD FrontEnd Gold

The background image aspect ratio is not touched at all by the program.
Background images normally are tiled; you can disable tiling and in case you do this your image should be very large, or should fade into the background color selected...
By the way you can use images as "invisible tables" background (tables with border = 0).
A "table" with 1 row x 1 column can be often used for various tricks. Or a table 1 x 2 where just a cell has a background, while the other cell is transparent. By softening images you can have several levels of (fictitious) transparency.
